Monsoon rains are expected to commence next month

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), both heavy and light rains are forecasted across various parts of the country, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, during the first week of the upcoming month.

Moderate to very heavy rains may increase water flows in local nullahs, streams, and rivers, potentially causing flash flooding in vulnerable areas. The monsoon rains may also trigger hill torrents in susceptible areas of Dera Ismail Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur, along with the Suleman and Kirthar Ranges. Additionally, urban flooding may occur in vulnerable areas across the country.

The rains could also provoke landslides in vulnerable regions such as Murree, Galiyat, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Due to increased temperatures and the forecasted rain spell in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, river and stream flows are expected to rise, with a higher probability of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) events in vulnerable and at-risk valleys.

The NDMA also warned that dust and wind-thunderstorms, as well as heavy rainfall, may cause damage to unsecured structures such as electrical poles, solar panels, hoardings, tall trees, and buildings under construction.

Citizens, especially travelers and tourists, are advised to stay updated on the anticipated weather, flood conditions, potential hazards, precautionary measures, and recommended alternative routes to ensure safe travel.
