Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, has called on all provincial governments to follow Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's lead in enforcing a plastic ban to make Pakistan a plastic-free country.
In a statement today, she acknowledged that achieving a plastic-free Pakistan is a highly challenging goal but emphasized that it is attainable with coordinated efforts by all provincial governments. This includes a comprehensive ban on the manufacturing, distribution, sale, and purchase of plastics in all forms at every level.
The Prime Minister's aide highlighted the necessity of continuous efforts to ensure compliance with the plastic ban and to address the associated challenges.
Romina Khurshid Alam stressed the urgent need to ban the production, distribution, and use of polythene bags due to their harmful environmental impact and their contribution to respiratory and other life-threatening conditions.
She also encouraged provincial governments to promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives like cotton bags to replace plastic bags. She appealed to citizens to adopt cloth and paper bags as substitutes for plastic.
Additionally, she underscored the critical importance of public engagement through awareness campaigns to mitigate the environmental impact of plastic waste and to advocate for more sustainable alternatives.
