President Emphasizes Importance of Socio-Economic Development in Gilgit-Baltistan


President Asif Ali Zardari has highlighted the importance of focusing on the socio-economic uplift of Gilgit-Baltistan, emphasizing that investment in the region would lead to economic prosperity.

He expressed these sentiments during a meeting with members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council in Islamabad today. The President assured the delegation of steps being taken to improve health, education, and road infrastructure in order to provide essential facilities to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

President Zardari stressed the need to expand the airport in Gilgit and explore new avenues for the region's development, highlighting its significance as the gateway to China and its vast economic potential.

Regarding the issue of compensation for the affectees of the Diamer-Bhasha dam, President Zardari assured the delegation that it would be addressed through appropriate channels.

The delegation raised concerns about the discontinuation of the Sehat Sahulat Programme, which has deprived the people of Gilgit-Baltistan of health insurance services. In response, President Zardari suggested integrating the Sehat Sahulat Programme into the Benazir Income Support Programme to ensure access to medical treatment for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The delegation expressed gratitude to the President for his commitment to the development of Gilgit-Baltistan and the resolution of its issues. President Zardari reaffirmed his cooperation and support in addressing the region's challenges.

During the meeting, the delegation briefed the President on the developmental and financial requirements of Gilgit-Baltistan. Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Gulbar Khan, members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council, and senior government officials were also present.
